03/24/2010Supporting "Running 4 Answers" via Reading!
7:30 p.m. Still Alice by Lisa Genova - Join us for a book discussion, gathering, celebration, and show of support for a dear friend, Carolyn Mastrangelo.
Once upon a time, on an early Saturday morning in the fall of 2004, a book discussion group evolved at the Caldwell Public Library, meeting at a truly insane hour - 8 a.m.! We called it the "Early A.M. Book Club" because it said it all, but it really didn't. We met before the library opened because it was clear THAT was the time some moms with little ones could sneak out for an hour and grab a cup of tea or coffee and talk about something other than potty training, and dads and children could cuddle up and watch "The Wiggles" or "Caillou" while mom stole away for an hour.
In any event, we are over five years later, and the book group has changed, moved to a later time, many members are now busy Saturday mornings with soccer games and art lessons for those little ones who are older, or work schedules have changed, but the friendships created even at that early hour remain. And, it is because of our deep feelings for one of those founding members, Carolyn Mastrangelo, that we want to be "up and doing"* and gather together at the library on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. to show that we, readers and friends, can play a part in supporting "Running 4 Answers."
Carolyn and her friend, Barbara Geiger, have been preparing for this April 10th event since last summer, and it is very clear that this is a labor of love. Alzheimer's disease will affect half of us by the age of 85 and those numbers are nothing short of frightening. Great progress has been made for this run/walk; everything is in place, now all that is needed are PARTICIPANTS.
So, whether you are thinking of running, donating, sponsoring, or, all of the above, how about joining us on the 24th to celebrate what has been accomplished thus far, discuss a topical book, and simply join together as a community. If you sign up for the run/walk on the 24th you will also receive a $5 discount - so whatta bargain! Oh, and please note: Do NOT stay home just because you didn't or couldn't read the book, we will be sure to have a few attendees who have read it, so just come and join us.

04/21/2010Greenwood Gardens Tour/Poetry Reading10 a.m. Come not to "the forest primeval" but instead join us as we wander over moss-covered paths and across wide grassy terraces and "gather in the aftermath" at Greenwood Gardens, a 28-acre, early twentieth-century estate now public garden in Short Hills, NJ. Take a tour of the gardens with the founder of Greenwood, Peter Blanchard III, and then experience New Jersey Poet Rick Mullin's sharing of some of Longfellow's works with us in the Tea House garden. More information regarding registration for this event will follow soon. In the meantime, however, we are most grateful to Greenwood Gardens for once again supporting The Big Read.
